Morgan State University has long been known for producing top quality graduates in the natural and physical sciences for the technical worksforce. In keeping with that tradition, the School of Engineering has earned an outstanding reputation of academic preparation of undergraduates since its inception in 1984. The School of Engineering has fully accredited undergraduate programs in Civil, Electrical, and Industrial Engineering and graduate programs that offer the Master of Engineering, Doctor of Engineering, and Master of Science in Transportation.
Students come to the engineering school from across the Nation, but primarily from the state of Maryland. Many are transfer students from other four-year institutions and local community colleges. Admission to the School is competitive and is based on the applicant's academic record and motivation for diligent study. To date, 1,433 students have graduated form Morgan's School of Engineering. Of these, nearly 100 have gone on to top engineering graduate schools and 10 have or are currently in Ph.D. programs. Many others have gained employment in major corporations, federal and state government agencies and private engineering firms.
The Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering is on the North Campus and is housed in a two building complex which includes the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Building and the William Donald Schaefer Building. The Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Engineering Building is one of the newest academic buildings on campus. It houses 16 modern laboratories for study and research in robotics, energy conversion, general, digital and micro electronics, communications, environmental studies and geotechnical engineering. It also houses Morgan's first supercomputer which is capable of 300 million calculations per second. Because of the rapidly growing student population (from 80 in 1984 to over 800 in 2000) the William Donald Schaefer Building doubles the facilities for engineering studies and provides classroom, research and office space for graduate programs and students pursuing the Master of Engineering and Doctor of Engineering degree programs.
A key to success of Morgan's engineering program is the quality and dedication of the faculty and staff. The multi-cultural faculty brings a wealth of academic, professional, and business experience to the classroom. Personalized academic advising and mentoring are a major strength of faculty-student interactions. Externally funded programs assist in recruitment and enrichment of promising potential students as well as retention and support of enrolled students. This includes numerous paid work and research experiences available to students as early as their sophomore year.
The School of Engineering provides valuable access opportunities for students seeking a foothold in today's competitive high technology world. According to Dean Eugene DeLoatch, "One does not have to be a genius to enjoy success in engineering. What is required of successful students is hard work." If you have the dedication for hard work with the promise of an exciting, rewarding career in engineering, welcome to the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering at Morgan State University.
